The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on August 24 on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through her aunt Denise. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art as well as theatre. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still at the college. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
